Perfection Is the Attainable Goal
Main Text: Philippians 3:12-21
The Apostle Paul reminds us that while we have not yet reached perfection, we press on toward the goal for which Christ Jesus has called us. Though Paul had an impressive religious resume, he openly acknowledged that he had not arrived. His honesty teaches us that acknowledging imperfection is not weakness—it is wisdom.
1. Acknowledge Our Imperfections
Paul declares that he has not already achieved perfection. Scripture affirms that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. As believers, we must resist both pride and paralyzing shame. Acknowledging imperfection is the starting line, not the finish line.
2. Actively Pursue Perfection
“I press on,” Paul writes. The Christian life is not passive. Like a runner leaning toward the finish line, we strain toward Christlikeness. We refuse shadowboxing faith—religious activity without spiritual growth—and instead pursue prayer, obedience, and spiritual maturity with intention.
3. Appreciate the Assurance of Perfection
Philippians 3:20-21 reminds us that we are citizens of heaven. Christ will transform our weak mortal bodies into glorious bodies like His own. Our final perfection rests not in our effort, but in His power. The same power that raised Jesus from the dead guarantees our glorification.
The cross secured our salvation, and the resurrection guarantees our transformation. Because Christ is perfect and victorious, perfection is not merely possible—it is promised.
