Persuaded by the Word

Persuaded by the Word
Jesus’ account of the rich man and Lazarus confronts us with a question that is both simple and searching: What are we doing with the Word God has already given us? The rich man wanted someone sent from the dead to warn his brothers. Abraham’s answer was direct: they already had Moses and the prophets. They already had God’s revealed truth.
That answer speaks to us as well. Many people believe that faith would be easier if they saw something dramatic. We may think that one unmistakable sign, one extraordinary experience, or one perfect moment would finally make us ready to obey God. Yet God has already spoken. Scripture reveals who God is, who we are, what sin is, and how salvation comes through Jesus Christ.
The danger is not that God has been silent. The danger is that our hearts can become hardened. The rich man had Lazarus at his gate day after day. He had opportunity after opportunity to show compassion, but he did not respond. His comfort became a place of spiritual blindness. He had much, but he was not prepared for eternity.
We may not possess the rich man’s wealth, but we can still look for comfort in things that cannot save us. We can place our confidence in money, relationships, habits, entertainment, achievements, or whatever helps us avoid facing God honestly. None of these things can settle the soul like Jesus can.
God’s call is not an invitation to panic; it is an invitation to come home. Christ calls in love. Jesus gave His life for sinners, and He still receives those who trust Him. His warnings are loving warnings because He knows the seriousness of eternity and desires that people turn to Him.
Do not wait for another sign when the Savior is already calling. Open the Word. Listen to the gospel. Trust that Jesus died and rose again. Respond to what God has already made clear. Faith grows as we hear and receive the Word concerning Christ.

Application
Set aside time each day this week to read Luke 16:19-31 and pray honestly about your response to God. Identify one area of obedience you have delayed and take a practical step toward faithfulness.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, thank You for speaking through Your Word and for calling us to Yourself in love. Forgive us for delaying obedience, trusting temporary comforts, or hardening our hearts. Help us receive Your truth, walk in faith, and show Your mercy to others. In Jesus’ name, amen.
